Optimizing Satellite Communications with Adaptive and Phased Array Antennas

چکیده
A new adaptive antenna array architecture for lowearth-orbit satellite ground stations is being investigated. These ground stations are intended to have no moving parts and could potentially be operated in populated areas, where terrestrial interference is likely. The architecture includes multiple, moderately directive phased arrays. The phased arrays, each steered in the approximate direction of the satellite, are adaptively combined to enhance the signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SNIR) of the desired satellite. The size of each phased array is to be traded-off with the number of phased arrays, to optimize cost, while meeting a bit-error-rate threshold. Also, two phased array architectures are being prototyped: a space-fed lens array and a reflect-array. If two co-channel satellites are in the field of view of the phased arrays, then multiuser detection techniques may enable simultaneous demodulation of the satellite signals, also known as space division multiple access (SDMA). We report on Phase I of the project, in which fixed directional elements are adaptively combined in a prototype to demodulate the S-band downlink of the EO-1 satellite.

An Adaptive Nulling Antenna for Military Satellite Communications
• Using adaptive nulling, an antenna system can reconfigure the receive antenna to produce nulls at the locations of any interference sources. Typically, two generic types of adaptive nulling antennas are considered: the thinned phased array and the multiple-beam antenna. The thinned phased array has excellent nulling resolution but is not a good candidate for area coverage. The multiple/beam a...

Abstract— This work investigates the improvement of the active reflection coefficient of waveguide-fed phased-array antenna using liquid crystal layers. The anisotropy properties of liquid crystal layer can be employed to eliminate blind scan angle and improve the wide angle impedance matching of the waveguide-fed phased array antennas. The authors have expressed the modal analysis of the waveg...

This article presents a phased array antenna employing MEMS phase shifter. The proposed phased array antenna consists of eight square patch antennas operating at 10.4 GHz with a bandwidth of 400 MHz. Feed line for each patch passes through a MEMS phase shifter realized by a series of bridges above the transmission line. The distance between the bridge and the transmission line underneath it is ...

Traditionally a majority of the commercial satellite communications systems have been fixed repeaters at C-band and Ku-band. The satellite industry is presently undergoing significant changes in the types of systems that are being fielded. New low earth orbit and geo stationary mobile systems have large numbers of flexible beams at either L-band or S-band through the use of large phased array a...
